music: my other muse
When I’m not painting, I write songs. Or, more accurately, songs find me. When I’m half asleep on the couch. Or when I’m in the shower and running late. Somehow, they beam into my brain from space when I least expect them, and I listen.
influences
Maybe it’s just some weird side-effect from all those records I’ve been addicted to my whole life. The classics by The Beatles and neo-classics of U2. The brilliant songcraft of Pete Yorn, Aimee Mann, Beck, Sting, Joseph Arthur, Crowded House and Luka Bloom. The raw power of Smashing Pumpkins, Neil Young, Sugar, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lenny Kravitz. The quirky pop of The Cars, Fountains of Wayne and XTC. And the artful genius of Radiohead and Peter Gabriel, among so many others.
the sound
It can run the gamut. From dark acoustic ballads, to catchy pop songs, to big fist-pumping rock anthems. My approach is to blend biting social commentary with self-effacing humor and just a dash of optimism. All captured within classic song structure, and sung with as much passion as I can muster.
